Western Governors University (WGU) was founded by 19 U.S. governors on the basis that they wanted to create their own university that would maximize the use of distance learning technologies. They understood the need for this with the growing population and limited educational funds. The idea was born in 1996, WGU became a nonprofit university in 1997, and in 1999 they began accepting students. Their mission is to create an educational environment that caters to the needs of hardworking adults whose lives or locations keep them from being able to attend a campus-based university.
A key competitive difference about WGU is that the healthcare programs were developed by employers that targeted each for the specific needs of the industry. Graduates can be confident that while at WGU, they will have gained the skills and knowledge required by the workplace. A further innovation is the educational style at WGU. There are no traditional classrooms; you earn your degree by demonstrating skills and knowledge through a series of assessments. They understand the demands on working professional seeking to advance their careers. In this regard, the university offers all of its degree programs in an online format. Furthermore, WGU’s nursing degree programs are now accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education.
At the College of Health Professions at WGU, students are able to choose from a bachelor’s or master’s degree track, where they can explore several programs, including:
